Consumer laws in India are designed to protect the rights of consumers and ensure that they are not taken advantage of by businesses. The main legislation that governs consumer protection in India is the Consumer Protection Act, 1986 (CPA), which provides for the establishment of consumer forums at the district, state, and national levels to hear complaints and resolve disputes between consumers and businesses.

The CPA provides for several rights for consumers, including the right to be protected against dangerous goods and services, the right to be informed about the quality, quantity, purity, and standard of goods and services, and the right to seek redressal in case of unfair trade practices or false or misleading advertisements. The act also provides for the appointment of a Central Consumer Protection Council and State Consumer Protection Councils to advise the Central Government and the State Governments on consumer protection measures.

Recently, the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, was passed, which provides for new provisions to enhance the rights of consumers and strengthen the redressal mechanism. The act has introduced provisions for e-commerce, direct selling, and product liability. It also provides for the establishment of a Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) to promote, protect, and enforce the rights of consumers. The CCPA is empowered to conduct investigations, conduct inspections and audits, and impose penalties for violation of consumer protection laws.
